The ship

About Manta Mae

Manta Mae is a 30.5-metre (100 ft) ironwood phinisi, built in Bira by Haji Baso between 2011 and 2014. Two masts, seven sails, beam 6.67 m, draft 2.69 m. The interiors were drawn by her owner, Marco Giovanardi: fossilized wood floors, coral and shell mosaic, ensuite bathrooms lined with labradorite. A 2021 refit kept the same layout.

Twelve guests sleep in five ensuite cabins, all reached from a lower-deck corridor except Marylin, the bunk cabin on the main deck. Dita, the master, takes a king and five portholes. Sophia and Brigitte each hold a queen and a single. Charlize is twins. Marylin is bunks. Crew of eight, plus a dive instructor and a dive master.

Manta Mae FAQ

Can I book a cabin instead of the whole ship?

Yes. Cabin charters run on published dates from $400 + per person per night in Marylin, Komodo. Take the whole ship if your group can fill the cabins, from $4,500/night. Some weeks are charter-only.

How many guests can sleep on Manta Mae?

Twelve across five ensuite cabins. Sophia and Brigitte each take a third berth. Eight is the more generous number if you leave Marylin empty.

Is she set up for diving?

Yes. Nitrox, tanks, a dive instructor and a dive master. Nitrox is included on a private week and extra on a cabin sailing. If nobody in the group dives, the decks still work.

Are the cabins above deck?

No. Dita, Charlize, Sophia and Brigitte sit below, with portholes. Marylin is on the main deck. If every cabin must sit above the waterline, look at Rascal or Rebel instead.

Who is Manta Mae for?

Divers and families who want twelve berths without a $12,000 night, and anyone who likes a proper wooden interior. She is a poor match if you want a steel explorer or a villa with every cabin above. Those groups are not how we sell her.
