The ship

About Kudanil Explorer

Kudanil Explorer is not a phinisi. She is a 50-metre (164 ft) steel expedition yacht, about 1,000 gross tons, rebuilt from a 1978 Teraoka safety-standby hull. The yacht conversion began in 2016, she relaunched in 2018, and she went through another yard in 2022. The point of the rebuild was range and even cabins: eight identical balcony suites, all above the waterline, so sixteen guests travel as equals rather than around one oversized master.

Each suite is 30.5 square metres (328 sq ft). The bedroom sets as a king or twins. The ensuite is 4.5 square metres. The balcony is 11 square metres and holds a daybed. Three cabins can add a child pull-out, which is how the ship reaches sixteen adults plus three children. Twenty-one crew run helm, galley, dive deck, spa and the tenders. Fourteen is the more generous number if you want a suite left as a dressing room or nanny space.

Days split across a sun-deck jacuzzi, an indoor lounge and bar, alfresco dining, a cinema and a library. The working deck carries compressors, surfboards, kayaks, paddleboards and several tenders. She is a Komodo boat in the dry months, a Raja Ampat boat when the wind turns, and she takes the Spice and Banda crossings when the nights allow. Surf weeks in Sumba or the Mentawais open when the swell and the calendar line up. Private charter is the usual week, from $26,000 a night. Cabin berths open on a short list of published sailings.

Questions

Kudanil Explorer FAQ

What kind of ship is Kudanil Explorer?

A 50-metre (164 ft) steel expedition yacht, laid down in 1978 as a safety-standby vessel and rebuilt for charter from 2016. Eight matching balcony suites, sixteen guests, twenty-one crew. She is not a phinisi. The hull is steel, the living is yacht, and the range is sized for Indonesia weeks rather than day trips.

How are the cabins split?

They are not. All eight suites are the same size, all above deck, each with a balcony and daybed. Beds set as kings or twins. Three cabins can add a child pull-out, which is how the ship reaches sixteen adults plus three children. Fourteen is the more generous number if you want a suite left as a dressing room or nanny space.

Is she private only, or can we join by the cabin?

Both. Private charter is the usual week, from $26,000 a night. Cabin berths open on a short list of published sailings, including Spice-to-Raja crossings and selected Raja Ampat weeks. We quote cabin rates per sailing rather than as a standing nightly figure.

Where does she usually cruise?

Komodo in the dry months, Raja Ampat when the wind turns, and Spice or Banda crossings when the nights allow. Surf weeks in Sumba or the Mentawais are arranged when the swell and the calendar line up. Tell us the dates; the route follows the season.

Who is Kudanil Explorer for?

A large family, two or three families sharing equally, or a dive- and surf-minded group that still wants a spa hour and a proper salon. She is a poor match for a two-cabin boutique week. Those groups belong on a smaller ship.
